Both men and women can suffer from sexually transmitted disease (STD) or sexually transmitted infection (STI). Many of STD's and STI's are quite common. Trichomoniasis is the most common of the STD's. It is estimated that more than 3 million people in the US have the disease. Most sexually active people are infected by HPV, the most common STI, at one point or another.

Trichomoniasism is caused by the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan parasite. The symptoms of the disease among infected men include irritation or itching inside the genitalia, burning sensation after ejaculation or urination, and discharge. Symptoms of trichomoniasis in females include burning, itching, soreness or redness of the genitalia, increased vaginal discharge that is white, clear, greenish or yellowish with unusually fishy odor.  The disease also causes unpleasantness during love making. Trichomoniasis is curable and the treatment is generally through medication (tinidazole or metronidazole), which comes in pills and taken orally. The treatment is safe for pregnant women. However, drinking alcohol within a day after the medication isn't recommended. The disease is known to recur. In fact, 1 in 5 of people gets it again 3 months after undergoing treatment. To prevent recurrence, its recommended that the bed partner is also treated and wait 7 to 10 days before having physical contact again.

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is a group of at least 150 related viruses. Most HPV infections go away on their own, but when they don't they can cause genital warts and even cancer.

The virus itself can't be treated and the warts that it is causing may not give discomfort to those who are infected. But genital warts treatment is required if symptoms include pain, burning or itching or if the warts are visible and causing emotional suffering. To prevent outbreaks of the symptoms, a doctor may recommend medication or surgery. It is important for women with the disease to see a doctor. Some HPV types can cause cancer in the vulva and cervix.

There are other diseases of the genital including pubic lice or crabs. They often cause itching. They are microscopic parasites and quite difficult to see. It would help to consult a doctor helps to determine for sure if crabs are causing the itching or other things. Generally, they can be eliminated by shampoos and other products available in drugstores. Pubic lice step by step treatment can also be found in the internet.
